Moloch and Social Media

Liv explains how Moloch applies to social media, such as Instagram beauty filters, and how people are incentivized to use them in order to stay competitive. Lex then asks if Moloch is the result of a centralized source or an emergent phenomena from a large collection of people. Liv responds that it is an emergent phenomena, and that it is a force of bad incentives in a multi-agent system. Lex then suggests that it is the responsibility of social media companies to anticipate and design rules to prevent Moloch-like situations.
