After stopping drug abuse at the age of 22, can your brain change and heal as discussed in the episode What Antidepressant Withdrawal Is Really Like | EP 171 Brooke Siem and the clip Healing Beyond Medications?
I've been struggling with the aftermath of a psychotic break I had at 17, which led to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and a long stint on medications. I was head of my class, involved in extracurriculars, and generally happy before this episode. I was put on Abilify 10 mg and Lamictal 150 mg, and stayed on them from 2009 to 2016 without any episodes. I decided to wean off the medications in 2016, but had another psychotic break a year later. I’ve been on these medications ever since, and I'm torn between the need to treat my condition and the feeling that I might be poisoning my body and my children throughout pregnancies and nursing. I'm grappling with what really caused my psychotic break—was it stress, lack of sleep, family tendencies, or something else? I listened to your podcast about mental health and was fascinated. What do you think caused my psychosis, and how can I address the root cause? How can I get off these medications safely? Additionally, my parents vaccinated me extensively as a child. Is it possible that those vaccines could have poisoned my gut/mind? If so, how do I fix it? I've been on mental health medications for too long, and it feels like they are hurting my body and children. Please help!
