• Dr. Huberman I have been smelling cigarette smell for over four months. There is no smoke present. I can smell it anytime of the day and it doesn't matter where I'm at could be home, church, store, restaurant etc. I have seen an ENT he didn't find much. I had a MRI December 22 brain looks good. Had someSmall bilateral maxillary sinus retention cyst or polyps. Orbits are remarkable. Then over the past four days I came down with the flu during these four days no smell of cigarette smoke . But then today January 2 at 10:30 pm the smell is back very strong. I have a referral to a neurologist but not until August 7. If I have to wait that long for help or some answers of what this is not sure I will be able to last another 8 months. I do see The ENT in February for follow up. Help any idea's what going on with me.?.

I'm sorry to hear about your ongoing experience. In terms of similar cases discussed by , there isn't a specific mention of a persistent smell like cigarette smoke without a source. However, while discussing smells and their effects, mentions that humans have vestigial organs like the vomeronasal organ, which is involved in detecting certain types of chemical signals in animals but is generally considered non-functional in humans. However, there's still some debate about the full extent of this organ's role in humans, involving social chemical signaling through the main olfactory system in some cases 1.

Your situation may involve a complex interplay of neuroscience and olfaction. Consulting with a neurologist, as planned, and considering other specialists like those experienced in olfactory disorders could provide further insights. Your persistence in seeking help is important, and hopefully, the specialists can offer more tailored advice or treatment options.
