I am a 22-year-old female who has worked out consistently since doing sports in high school (swim and water polo). I started going to the gym in my senior year when I was no longer able to compete in sports because I was rapidly losing weight, and a dietitian was concerned for my overall health. Once I was allowed to work out again, I didn't know how to lift, so going to the gym included using cardio machines and occasionally hitting the ab machines and some of the random machines like abductor or leg curls or shoulder press with no rhyme or reason. About 2021-2022, I started hearing about the importance of the big lifts and the benefits of muscle building vs. focusing solely on cardio. Long story short, from 2021 until now, it has been a slow process of increasing my calories, focusing on protein intake, and aiming to get stronger in the gym. Despite my efforts, I am struggling to see improvement in any gains. I'm guessing this is due to programming, and I have been trying to focus on progressive overload because I hear that term a lot. However, I feel that I have been stuck after an initial improvement a year or two ago. What should I do to continue making progress?
