Spending time outdoors offers significant benefits for vision health. highlights studies showing that two hours of outdoor exposure daily can reduce the risk of developing myopia, or nearsightedness, by promoting the health of eye muscles and enhancing the focusing mechanism of the eye 1. This effect is attributed to the activation of melanopsin ganglion cells by natural sunlight, which supports the eye's ability to adjust focus and maintain muscle health 2.

Staying indoors, just getting artificial light, and looking at things up close leads to visual defects.

Additionally, exposure to sunlight helps regulate circadian rhythms, impacting mood, metabolism, and learning capabilities 3.

    Vision Protocols

Various protocols can enhance vision, including exercises like smooth pursuit, which involves tracking moving objects to strengthen eye muscles 4. suggests incorporating distance viewing into daily routines, as it relaxes the eye's lens and reduces stress, contributing to overall eye health 5.

    Vision Nutrition

Nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining vision health. emphasizes the importance of vitamin A and carotenoids, found in leafy vegetables and carrots, for supporting the biochemical processes essential for vision 7. Lutein, a compound found in egg yolks, has been shown to improve macular pigment density and visual acuity, particularly in individuals with moderate to severe macular degeneration 8.

There is some evidence, I spoke to our chair of ophthalmology, there is some evidence through quality peer-reviewed studies that supplementing with lutein can help offset some of the detrimental effects of age-related macular degeneration.

    --- Andrew Huberman

While lutein may not significantly benefit those with normal vision, it could be advantageous for those at risk of vision loss 9.
