Episode Highlights
Lipid Panel
Paul Saladino discusses his lipid panel results, emphasizing that high LDL cholesterol is not necessarily a predictor of cardiovascular risk. He argues that LDL's role in atherosclerosis is not well-supported by evidence and highlights his own low inflammation levels, with an HSCRP of 0.5 1. Paul also shares his lipid history, noting that his LDL levels were significantly higher on a strict carnivore diet but remained insulin sensitive 2.
I think being myopically focused on LDL is a mistake that is harming people. They get put on statins, they get put on other lipid lowering drugs, and they remove some of the most nutrient rich foods in their diet.
--- Paul Saladino
He stresses the importance of context when interpreting lipid levels, particularly in insulin-sensitive individuals.
Inflammation
Paul examines inflammatory markers like CRP and homocysteine, explaining their relevance to overall health. He notes that his HSCRP was 0.5, indicating low inflammation, and discusses how intense physical activity can temporarily elevate these markers 3. He emphasizes that context is crucial, particularly for those on an animal-based diet, as mainstream physicians often misinterpret these markers in insulin-sensitive individuals 4.
Context matters. And perhaps we should be asking the question, is LDL, are a few of these other metrics something to worry about if the patient, if you are insulin sensitive?
--- Paul Saladino
Paul argues that many mainstream interpretations fail to consider the unique metabolic context of individuals following his dietary recommendations.
Insulin Sensitivity
Paul highlights the importance of insulin sensitivity metrics like fasting insulin and glucose. He shares that his fasting insulin was 2.4, well below the median for the American population, and explains how adding carbohydrates improved his overall health markers 5. He criticizes the broad reference ranges used in mainstream medicine, arguing for tighter standards to better identify insulin resistance 6.
Fasting insulin should be less than five micro Iu per milliliter. Again, mine was 2.4.
--- Paul Saladino
Paul believes that more accurate metrics could significantly change medical practice and improve patient outcomes.
Vitamins & Minerals
Paul reviews his vitamin and mineral levels, noting that his vitamin D levels are the highest they've ever been without supplementation. He attributes this to sun exposure and an animal-based diet 7. He also discusses his iron levels, explaining that while his serum iron is normal, he plans to monitor his iron saturation for potential hemochromatosis 8.
You do not need to supplement with magnesium on an animal based diet. In my opinion, that is bullshit.
--- Paul Saladino
Paul argues that a well-rounded animal-based diet can meet all essential nutrient needs without supplementation.
