    • Defining Values

Steven Hayes and Scott Kaufman discuss the essence of values within Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Steven emphasizes that values are not mere goals like money or fame, but qualities of action such as compassion and creativity 1. Scott reflects on how reconnecting with one's highest values can reconfigure priorities and inspire meaningful change 2.

I really care about these deep values. Over here, I get to bring these out into the world in a way that opens up and builds out over here, the journey I'm on. Part of what I don't like about this journey is I don't get to do that. Well, then let's change the direction. And that's the pivot metaphor where people are trying to. Whatever they're doing, in this case, on the values and committed action piece.

      --- Steven Hayes

Steven also introduces the concept of psychological flexibility, which he defines as the ability to adapt and pivot towards one's values despite challenges 1.

      Values in Action

Applying values in daily life is crucial for personal growth. Steven explains that embracing all emotions, even the uncomfortable ones, is essential for living a values-driven life 3. Scott shares his struggle with conflicting values, such as the desire to help others versus personal time constraints 4.

One of the things I do want to focus on when you have these multiple values that seemingly conflict almost always. It's not a values conflict. What it is is opening up to the pain of finitude. You are a finite being.

      --- Steven Hayes

Steven advises that recognizing our limitations can help us make more meaningful choices aligned with our values 4.
